Make money on TikTok with no followers: what actually works

Published 30 September 2026 · by UGC Pocket · ~10 min read

TL;DR

At zero followers, most of TikTok's own payouts are closed to you: the Creator Rewards Program asks for 10,000 followers and 100,000 views in the last 30 days, Subscription for more than 10,000 followers, and brand projects on TikTok One for at least 1,000. What can pay before you have an audience sits outside those programs: brand challenges you post on your own account, paid on their views, and UGC videos you deliver to a brand. TikTok itself says follower count is not a direct factor in what it recommends. Any job that asks you to pay before you get paid is a scam.

Why TikTok's own programs are out of reach at zero followers

TikTok pays creators directly through a handful of programs, and all of them assume an existing audience. Here is what each one asks for, according to TikTok's Creator Academy.

Two details matter more than the thresholds. First, the Creator Rewards Program only rewards original videos over one minute long that reach at least 1,000 views on the For You feed. Second, TikTok states that ads, paid promotions and sponsored content do not qualify for those rewards. A video a brand pays you for will not earn Creator Rewards on top, even once you pass 10,000 followers. The two income streams are separate.

Follower count is not a direct ranking factor

In its 2020 explanation of the For You feed, TikTok wrote that follower count is not a direct factor in its recommendation system, and neither is a history of past hits. TikTok adds that a video posted by an account with more followers is likely to get more views, simply because of that base. What the system does use: how people interact with videos (likes, shares, comments, accounts followed), information about the video itself (captions, sounds, hashtags), and settings such as language, country and device type.

The Creator Academy says it differently today: a video travels further on the For You feed based on the system's performance predictions and on how viewers engage with it. Its advice: pick a clear niche so the system knows who to show you to, hook viewers in the first three seconds, and post more often. On brand deals, the same academy writes that follower count matters, but that niche expertise and consistent, high-quality posting often matter more.

What this means for you: a new account can reach people with its very first video, if that video holds attention. Nothing guarantees it, and many first videos get very few views. Followers help, but the part you control from day one is the video.

What pays before you have an audience

With TikTok's programs closed for now, the money at zero followers comes from brands. Two routes do not depend on your follower count: brand challenges you post on your own account, paid on the views of those videos (a model close to content rewards), and delivered UGC, video files a brand buys to post itself or run as ads. Both are explained, with a first portfolio and a challenge step by step, in our guide on how to start UGC with no followers. UGC Pocket is built on brand challenges, and it is not the only platform to offer them: how it works is on our page for creators, and our guide to UGC apps for creators lists what to check before you pick one.

Affiliate links, for example on TikTok Shop, pay a commission on sales, and sales are rare at zero followers. From 1,000 followers, TikTok One adds brand campaigns where, according to the Creator Academy, the video can be posted on your profile, on the brand's profile, or delivered as an ad.

Scams to avoid

Offers of easy money online are a known scam vector. The FTC in the United States and cybermalveillance.gouv.fr in France both warn about one scheme in particular: the task scam.

The FTC describes it like this. An unexpected text offers online work. The tasks are simple, like liking videos or rating product images, and an app shows a growing balance. Then the app asks you to deposit your own money, usually in crypto, to unlock your earnings or the next tasks. The deposit is gone. Cybermalveillance.gouv.fr, France's public cybercrime assistance service, describes the same scheme with TikTok and Instagram tasks: liking videos or following accounts, a first small payment that is real so you trust the process, then a crypto balance you have to top up with your own money to buy task packs whose targets become impossible to reach.

The one rule

Never pay to get paid

On a legitimate creator platform, the brand pays. The UGC Pocket app is free, and so is signing up. If anyone asks you for money before your first payout, stop there. In the United States, report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. In France, cybermalveillance.gouv.fr explains where to report.

When brand challenges are not the right route

Start this week

  1. Pick one niche you can cover in ten videos. Apps and software you already use are a good start: the video shows a task, not your life.
  2. Set up the account properly. A public account, with a bio that says what you post about.
  3. Post three test videos in that niche. Work on the first three seconds, then check in your analytics which video held attention longest.
  4. Decide whether to show your face. Plenty of app videos work with a screen recording and a voice. Our guide to faceless UGC goes through the formats.
  5. Request access to brands that match your niche. The UGC Pocket app is free on iOS and Android.

FAQ

Can you make money on TikTok with 0 followers?

Yes, but rarely through TikTok's own programs: TikTok One starts at 1,000 followers, and the Creator Rewards Program and Subscription at 10,000. At zero followers, the money comes from brands: challenges posted on your own account and paid on their views, or UGC videos delivered as files.

How many followers do you need for the TikTok Creator Rewards Program?

10,000 followers and 100,000 video views in the last 30 days, according to TikTok's Creator Academy (checked 30 September 2026). You also need to be 18 or older, use a personal account, be based in one of the eight open countries, and post original videos over one minute long.

Do sponsored videos count for the Creator Rewards Program?

No. TikTok's Creator Academy states that ads, paid promotions and sponsored content do not qualify for Creator Rewards. Money from a brand and TikTok's rewards are two separate income streams, even once you pass 10,000 followers.

Can I go LIVE on TikTok with no followers?

According to TikTok's Creator Academy, you must be 18 or meet the age of majority in your country to go LIVE, and its Going LIVE article does not mention a follower minimum. The catch is the audience: gifts come from viewers watching in real time, and a new account has few of them.

Do brand challenges pay per view?

On UGC Pocket, pay depends on the views of the videos published on your declared accounts, beyond a threshold of cumulative views, and each challenge shows its pay conditions before you start. Other platforms set their own rules, so read them before you film.

An app asks me for a deposit before paying me. Is it a scam?

Treat it as one. The FTC puts it plainly: never pay anyone to get paid or to get a job. Task scams show a growing balance, then ask for a deposit, often in crypto, to unlock it. The deposit is lost.

Post on your own account, get paid on your views

The UGC Pocket app is free on iOS and Android. There is no follower minimum to sign up: each brand accepts or declines access to its challenges, and every challenge shows its pay conditions before you start.
